April eleventh, 1849.
Things aren’t going so well, Some of the crew is very ill, and we are heading for a tropical storm. With half the crew gone I’m not sure we’re going to make it out alive!!! I’m thinking I’m not going to make it to California. On top of that the ship is loaded with supplies. Mr. Schub is the most grumpy on the ship. He keeps complaining, “Oh this ship ride is too long” or,” I better not get sick with this illness.” C.L., the one with the illness, has died. As he died he pushed himself overboard. Rod Rodney is doing well. He is always on the positive side.

April twentieth 1849. We are in a storm. The Golden Flower has been seriously damaged. There is also a thief on board who has stolen everyone’s money. I have nothing to worry about because I am already broke. Everyone on board is ill including me. John Schub is so delirious he thinks he’s in the war he fought ages ago. (no surprise). Well, let’s cut to the chase, we’re messed up!!!

Hello, I am Gano Carousa. I am from Madagascar, and I have a wife and four children. I am going to California in search of gold. I come from a family of miners. We moved to Africa from Europe before I was born. I tried the mining business in Madagascar but I hated it. So I decided to fish.

We are still sailing, and I am getting EXTREMELY bored. Sometimes I play a game of chess with Allen Tarkenin, who is teaching me. So far everything has been fine except that there is a thief onboard who stole Mr. Ratova’s extremely valuable pocketknife. Mr. Ratova is the horse doctor. I hope we catch the thief. I found another thing to pass the time away. I’m charting the longitude and latitude. Right now we are 15 degrees South and 165 degrees East and we have been traveling for 20 days. It seems to be agonizingly slow. About the pocketknife, Mr. Ratova showed me it. Here is a picture of it.

I think I have amazing luck. First of all I’m no longer sick. Second is we are literally in San Francisco. Then also the luckiest thing happened, WE CAUGHT THE THIEF, and guess who it was. Allen Tarkenin, the “Trader”. We even found where he was hiding the money he stole. He stuffed it down the barrel of his rifle! I got all my money back, so I’m no longer broke! The only bad thing that is happening is that most of our food and water is going stale. Also I’ve heard rumors from the crew that most ships get torn apart because of the wind in the bay, though I doubt that Mr. Rodney would let us crash. I’m also having second thoughts about going to the gold field. I could probably start a fishing business. Everyone is having second thoughts also. They are all getting anxious to get ashore. Some are so anxious that they are saying they are going to swim the rest of the way.

My name is Tom Smith. I am 35. Forgive me if you cannot read my handwriting, or if my spelling is off. I live in the Basque Country, I was born and raised here, and I still live in the same farmhouse. I love it here, and if I want to keep this house, I will have to get some yellow. I leave for New York in two weeks, and from there, it will be in a wagon and to San Francisco. My wife will have to do all the farming work while I am gone so I surprised her by hiring some helping hands.
1/22/1849
Here I am, New York City!!! I cannot believe it. Can you? I brought my cow, for emergency food, (my son was NOT happy with that.) and in case I have no friends, or company. I packed…
1. Mining tools
2. GUNS. I REFUSE TO BE ROBBED!!!
3. 5 extra maps. No getting lost for me, no thanks!!
4. Water, for I hear there are multiple deserts on the way to California, and I will not enjoy dying from thirst. I also packed food because I am bound to get hungry on the way.
5. Books for boredom.
4/16/1849
Man, this life is NOT what it is cracked up to be. First, bandits attacked us!!!!! They took all the food and water, money, and the mining tools. They were no good anyway and I can just get brand new ones in California. They also took the MAP!!!!! I mean, what are they going to do with it!!!!! We are in Charleston, West Virginia. It took 20 days. Hunting really stinks, because it is not like I have done it before and nobody else has either!!!!!!
WE ARE HERE!!!!!!!!
6/23/1849
After 130 days, we got here!!!! I think I will get a hair cut. I think I will do so much here, I might as well build myself a house and tell my family to move on down!!! I have never been so happy in my life! Gold is what I have become!! See ya!!!
11 years later/ 1860…
I might as well go home. The only thing that has changed is my handwriting. Big deal. So, I guess this is it. Sad, but true. No gold, money, and if it just cannot get any worse, my wife died. I will have a funeral when I get back. I am going home by ship. So much for Gold Mountain. So long.
Tom Smith

I’ve arrived in Panama City after a long trip. Once we were stranded in the Isthmus, we waited for the bungo boats to come. When they arrived, two people were really sick with yellow fever. We got on the boats and experienced the amazing sounds and sights of the jungle. The bad part of the trip was the mosquito bites. There were mosquito’s everywhere, and, when I came out of the jungle, I looked like one big mosquito bite. When we got to Panama City we found out that Jim has yellow fever from all the bites. Now we’re waiting for a ship to come to take Scott,Charlie or Charles and I. I’m sorry to say but while we were around town looking for a ship for a month or more, our friend who has yellow fever died. That’s what happened. Right when we found a ship called California he died. That’s where we are right now. Three of us are aboard a ship headed for gold.
15/7/1849
Two big things have happened since I arrived in Hangtown. The day after I arrived we were all panning adn getting a few bits of dust. There was one person named Bob from N.Y. who couldn’t find any dust. He was trying the hardest and he couldn’t find anything but sand. He was so mad that he pulled out a huge tuft of grass and under it was at least$20.000 in gold nuggets. The second thing only happened today. Someone put up a law book. Nobody liked it so they burned it. When everybody was out making cigars out of the book except me because I don’t smoke something strange happened. I was walking around when I saw this man who wasn’t dressed in miner’s clothes. He was dressed in white coat with black pants. He asked me “Why aren’t you rollin’ cigars like the rest of ‘em?” I said, “Because I don’t smoke.” He said “Why don’t you go help them roll cigars but don’t smoke ‘em.” “O.K.,” I said. I went off to tell the boys. I knew something wasn’t right. When we returned we found him on a horse and about to steal it. We formed a circle around him and took him away. Next we hanged him and let him swing there as a reminder to other people.

Bonjour! My name is Jacque. I am a French baker and live among the beautiful lights of Paris. I was born on a small farm sixty miles outside of Paris.
March,20,1849
Saying good bye to my family was a hard task and it took almost an hour. By the time I got out of the door my shirt was wet with tears. There were many things to pack and I needed help getting it all to the ship to get to my port city. I packed a trunk with: 2 clothing articles, a guide to learning English, 10 candles, 5 sheets, 2 leather sacks, 1 mosquito net, 1 picture of my family, 1 pick axe, 1 set of stationary, 2 rifles, 1 map of the U.S.A,1 quill and a bottle of ink,
2 machetes, 1 animal skinner,
1 pair of leather boots,
2 canteens and 1 hat. I had to take a two week boat ride to New York city. When I got to my port city the boarding area for the wagons were packed. This was my first time in America and it is a strange place. Before I left I saw a man selling black lab puppies. I found the healthiest looking one and bought him. He cost $10.
April, 20, 1849
So far the trip has proven to be much harder than planned. Our wagon train was attacked by a bandit, and they took all our food, water, and the driver’s map. It seemed that all hope was lost until I remembered the map in my trunk. I hope it helps. I have to keep my eyes on the prize or we’ll NEVER make it to California.
January, 1, 1850
Although most of the gold is gone, I still see many people arriving in the bay every day. For my birthday my family came to California to live with me!!! We all now living contently near the water in a good sized house. I went up to the diggins’ once just to see what it was like. On the way there we met some Native Americans. At first I was a little bit scared, but they turned out to be very helpful in getting us.
Hi, I am Christopher Graystone. I was born on the ninth of August in 1831. When I turned twelve, my family moved from London to Hong Kong. The year before, Britain claimed Hong Kong’s territory. We moved to Hong Kong because my father thought that it would give him more opportunities in his job. When I turned 19,news spread to Hong Kong about the gold rush. I hoped to go to California and strike gold.
When I boarded my ship, I met a man named Roger. He is British like me and very smart. He’s lighthearted and is traveling by himself. I also met a man named Gang. He is one of the strongest men on the ship and is a fisherman. He is a quick witted fellow and knows the latest news on the gold rush. He is traveling with his younger brother Fu. Fu is smaller built than Gang. He is a pretty quiet person, but when he talks it is either saying something smart or cracking a joke like his older brother.
Roger is twenty-one, Gang is twenty-three, and Fu is eighteen. We all got assigned to the same room so, all in all, I think this will be one of the most fun trips of my life.
I think I have caught gold fever!
After two days, my job has been doing its magic. I have sold six pickaxes, thirteen pans, and four buckets. I have just thought of another idea for my business that will get me even MORE money. Not only will I buy wood for my shop, but I will also buy wood for long toms. I will make twice as much money and be able to go home happy (and rich!)
On the fourth day I witnessed something that would scar me for the rest of my life. I was going to buy food when I passed a large oak tree. Many men were around it, so I went to see what was happening. When I got close though, I saw that someone was about to get hanged. I asked the man next to me why and he said that the man had murdered someone and stole two horses.
Once I saw that they were about to let him hang there, I averted my eyes and walked away.
The day after that, outside my tent I heard shouts. I ran out and saw about half a dozen people crowded around a grizzly man. When I came closer I realized that in his hand was a gold nugget about the size of an acorn. A man asked him where his claim was. He told him. Almost at once all of the men hurried to my blacksmiths shop. That was just the first day of a booming business.
March 31st 1848:
My name is Henry Jones and I’m a merchant/miner going to California. I live in Independence, Missouri, I’m an only child and come from a very rich family. My plan in California is to sell supplies out of the back of my wagon in the miner area. When business is slow I’ll lock up and mine right next to my wagon. I’ll sleep in the wagon at night in the gold fields. I plan to do this for near the rest of my life. California watch out!
April 3rd 1848:
I said a tearful goodbye to my parents and friends, I have everything packed for California including my merchant supplies, mining supplies and everything I’ll ever need. This is the list. P.S I will also use these things for myself.

3.x4 chickens and feed
4.x3 cows and feed
5.x50 dollars
6. a tent.
7. envelopes to send letters to my friends and family.
8. A journal.
I expect the trip to take a couple of months.
I have lost track of the date so I’m just going to write this. My wagon train is coming down with Cholera, We’re in Oregon, and in my dreams I can picture selling my goods and finding gold nuggets in the ground, I hope I’m not setting my self up for a major disappointment.
Again I lost track of the date. But I’m in California! I have set up a deal with a shipping company for monthly shipments. I have friends from Mexico, England and from Independence! I am in Hangtown, I have made forty dollars and panned in freezing water for a half an ounce of gold in one week. I love my cabin that I built, and yes, no more selling and living in my wagon. This is great. Soon I will have enough money to start a business and make a house in San Francisco and live happy ever after, if a happy ending even exists.

May 1849
Hello again! As I said, my name is Ana. I am 14 years old and I am in a family of three. I have one younger sister named Luisa and I have a father named Luis. My mother, well, I really don’t like to talk about it but, she died when I was five and Luisa was three. I don’t know quite how she died but I wager that father will tell Luisa and I when he is ready.
Just like any other regular person I have hopes and dreams. But since we aren’t that rich, everyone including Luisa has to work full-time on a job that our father wants us to do. I still believe that a long time from now something wonderful will happen and that some day I will own my own ranch and I will ride around horses all day! I hope that dream comes true!!!
July 1849
I am sooooooo happy now! Our ship is going much faster and we found father’s mining tools! The crack in the ship has been patched up for the time being. About five weeks ago I saw Monica and since then we have become close friends. We spend all of our free time playing together, and I sit next to her at all meals. To make things even better, Luisa has become great friends with Nathália, and Monica’s father has become great friends with my father!
Monica’s father has heard of a man in California named Levi Strauss, and he told my father about him. The good thing is that if father decides to work for him, he will be paid so we don’t have to worry about finding gold!
March 17, 1849
Today I decided to leave Chile and head to California. I am leaving my parents to find gold. I have some mining experience so I hope to strike gold. I am leaving on the 28th. I am bringing many books with me to pass the time on the boat. I am also going to miss my parents very much. I’m going to find my fortune in California and no one can stop me.
April 8, 1849
Our ship is not very lucky. There is a robber on the ship and rats are eating all our food. I hope that the robber gets caught. He has stolen the ring that my father gave me. I think I know who the robber is. It’s this guy named Jorge. He says he doesn’t have a last name but I think that’s just a cover up. The rats have eaten a whole ten pounds of food. That’s a lot of food. I’m learning English. I can say hello. I think that means hola. It is very boring on the boat. All you do is play cards, walk around, read, and go to the saloon.
August 15, 1849
I am so excited. I found my first flake of GOLD! I hope to find more because I am staying for a whole two years. I found it last week. I was panning and I personally stink at panning but it was just at the bottom of my pan. I also have learned so many new words. I can basically understand English. A month ago, my Italian friends found a nugget, a real nugget. The nugget weighed about a pound. I wish to find gold so much I almost felt like taking it. My family sent letters and one of them said our dog had puppies. They’re naming one California just for me. I still am selling sugar, flour, coffee etc. I have made about 3,000 dollars. I am in the mines right now. I just finished a bear steak. It was delicious. I have so many flea bites I am starting to look like one big flea bite. Two weeks ago someone saw a bandit coming toward our camp, so keep your eyes open.
Friday, October, 20th , 1849
My name is Tia Wang. I am 32 years old. I was born on November, 21st , 1817. Right now the year is 1849. I am from Hong Kong China.
Sunday, October, 31st , 1849
Right now I am in a bar with a lot of other miners. I have already met a few people. It was kind of hard to talk to them though. I am relived to finally get to Gold Mountain and I intend on starting to mine in two days time. I still have to learn more English though.
Saturday, November, 22nd , 1849
Right now as I write this I am in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The only thing that I can see is the bluish green water. I can only hear the sound of our ship cutting through the water. I’m feeling a little bit like I wished I had stayed in China. Right now our ship is exactly 30°N and 135°E. I have felt seasick for the past few days. We have only been at sea for ten days. Recently our ship ran into a typhoon. The weather was awful at that point. My clothing got soaked.

I am Loopolio Macaroni. I am from Naples, Italy. I invented the pizza but I got banned from my country because there is a disease in my pizzas. You see, back in my restaurant, rats laid their droppings in the cheese. So I hope to go to California because they have gold and not a lot of rats. I hope to strike it rich.
April 7, 1849
Packing was easy because I am poor. I only have one trunk with four shirts, four pairs of pants, five pick axes and four pounds of pizza dough in an ice box.
April 15, 1849
So far, things are not going well. Our boat crashed on the way through Panama. So my shipmates and I are camping in a jungle and waiting for a rescue boat.
But, at least I brought pizza dough so we won’t starve to death. Donatella is screaming, “We are all going to die!” Vincenzo is trying to make a boat to escape and Michelangelo is trying to invent a weapon to kill the panther that is chasing us. It is getting closer every day. I hope we make it out alive.
May 5th, 1849
I grew up in Italy, but when I was five my dad got a job near the Eiffel Tower as a waiter. My home in Paris was a little one story house with a huge backyard. My Mom died of a fever when I was fifteen and got buried in Italy. My father died when he was trying to settle down a horse two years after my mother died and got buried next to my mother in Italy.
When I was in Italy I met a girl named Maria at a bar in Venice. Maria is French too and her parents died when she was fifteen also. After that we went back to Paris and got married at a church. I was twenty then and my birthday is in nine months. After I came home after trying to sell bread on the street Maria told me that she was pregnant and that the baby was due on my birthday. In nine months the day that I was waiting for came. I was getting ready to go to work When Maria screamed “ I’m going to have a baby!” I dropped my bread and ran to the doctor who lived across the street. I grabbed him and ran back to the room. At about 9:00 Maria let out a scream that was so loud that my eardrums broke. I saw my little boy. He was so cute with his big red cheeks.
I was twenty-five that day and that day was when I found out that there was gold in California. I thought to myself “Do I have gold fever?” I decided to go to CA because I wanted to go to the U.S. ever since I was a kid to mine for gold.
August 10th, 1849
I have gone to San Francisco to try and make a profit out of a café. My wife sent me a letter saying that she was pregnant again and that the baby was due on her birthday which is on January 4th. I am now twenty-eight and my hope is to start a family in CA. (Change of plans.) My grand opening is tomorrow and I think having my dog with me will be delightful. I was walking down the street when I saw a ship pull in to the harbor. I decided to tell them that my Café was opening tomorrow. I was telling people when I saw a person who looked like Maria and had three boys around her. It was Maria! I ran to her but when I went up to her and she just didn’t recognize me. I asked her if she could recognize me and she did. We hugged and kissed. Then I went up to my boys and hugged them and hugged them more. I told them that I was opening my own Café and that I found a lot of gold. Luckily they took all of the that was at our house and took it hear with them. We went to a doctor and the doctor told us that she was pregnant with quadruplets. It is now January 4th and the baby came a week early. My wife had named one of them Zidane Jr., Ivan, Connor, and Charles. They all look so cute and I will happily ever after. Wait! There is one more thing that about Cute-eye Higgins I won’t to tell you about; he has gotten hanged by Traysworthy brother of Praysworthy.
My name is Sebastian. I left in 1949 from Missouri to look for gold in California. My wife and my two kids are hoping for me to strike it rich and come home with a mountain of gold. I am a market owner at SSP Market. I just bought my mining equipment that I will use to mine gold in California. I hope that when I’m gone my wife and the kids will get along ok My dream is to strike it rich and then come back. I have mined before so I have an advantage over other miners. I just hope that there’s going to be enough gold when I get there, but for now I’m crossing my fingers.
The journey is not going very well for me and my partners. We had a big delay three days into the trip. One of our lead oxen died, so we had to stop and bury it. At the next town we got a new lead oxen but it was just caught and isn’t tame at all, plus our food is already almost half way gone and most of the meat is rotting. My partners and I feel like giving up and the journey is just beginning.
I have been in California working in my business for five months. You wouldn’t believe the demand for equipment for mining these days. Over the last few months my fellow workers and I have become rich! With more than twenty times as much as we came with, I’m thinking of having my family come here and live at my shop on my third floor. In fact, I think I’ll go send a letter to them right now.
I am María Bozzolo. I am 23 years old. I have a mother, five sisters named Sofíí, Catalina and Isodra and one older brother named Matías who is deathly ill and frail and as my mother would say ‘”he will die any day now”’ hopefully I will be at his side when that happens. I have cut my hair short to disguise myself as my brother so I can get some gold. With the money I will buy medicine for my brother if he is alive when I get back. My mother keeps trying to earn money for my brother although her efforts are huge they usually get us little money. Even my little sister is trying to help by working at the tailors. By getting gold I will not just safe my brother but I will also help my family. My mother keeps worrying about someone discovering that I am not a man but the answer is always the same we will have to take that chance.
I showed the captain my ticket and he told me what class I paid for (the person who sold me the ticket did not tell me what class I paid for) it was third. Third included water food and a bunk with someone by the name of Luis (I heard many rumors that he could snore talk and walk in his sleep at the same time) he seemed like a really nice 26 year old there was nothing strange about him other then he had a scar from his forehead to his chin. There was also a girl named Dominga who looked very, very, very rich she had only the finest clothes and was of course first class as unusual as it sounds she was not a brat I knew from first look at her that we were going to be friends. There was also a man named José when you looked at him your skin would crawl, you would start to shake and when he looked at you, you would start to cry. There was also a man my age named Leonardo he was very handsome he was a blond short haired sailor who’s plan was to sell hammocks half the time and dig for gold half the time when I told him I could help he was relieved now we are going to split the profit in half. There were lots of other passengers but they were busy making their beds.
It has been twelve years! Leonardo and I came back to Chile with our pockets full of gold! We got Matías to the hospital and now he is married an has five children: a one week old named Carlos, Melissa a nine year old brat that thinks she’s so special because she has a English name but the only reason she has one is because both her parents were sick when she was born so I had to chose her name and well I couldn’t think of one, a five year old named Fransisco who cannot walk but loves to go fast, a three year old named Sunita who loves story’s and a seven year old named Oskar who loves to be thrown about. You think I would be happy for him but you try buying birthday presents for five kids every year. All my sisters and my mother moved from our old house to a log cabin. Leonardo and I are now married and have one child named Ana who has a gift with animals and words but her heart hurts whenever she runs. She is the best thing god could give me. That’s pretty much all.
Sept. 5, 1849
There are many people on our ship headed for San Francisco. Everyone is looking to strike it rich. One of the men who is always smoking a cigar is going to sell picks to miners. Mr. Brown says there is a lot of money in selling mining supplies. Another family, the Lees, are going to start a diner. They have a son my age, Ling, who said he can’t wait to get to San Francisco. The captain, Captain Jack, is a person who likes to talk a lot. He says we will beat all the other ships to San Francisco

Sept. 15, 1849
I think everybody is scared. We just hit a very big wave and everything is really wet and lots of people have lost their money. One person I know who lost their money is Mr. Brown. He’s feeling sad and mad. I lost a whistle that my dad gave me and I’m feeling pretty sad too. Also a lot of people are getting sick like my friend Ling, but after all that tragedy, we’ve actually gotten a long way in only ten days.
-Kyo
Sept. 18, 1849
I’m feeling great, because Captain Jack says we’re almost there. The only thing that’s got me down is a couple of people said that in California Asian people get treated badly. They don’t get paid as much for the gold they find. I’m confused whether to believe it or not. I didn’t come all this way to be treated badly.

March 15th
We finally set of for California! I have to sleep with 8 other people and one dog. Here is a description of a few of them. I’ll start with Grampa S whose real mane is Sal. He is called that because he is bald (except for a few grey patches around his ears), walks with a cane, wears old fashion cloths, is 60 years old , and is the sweetest man you will ever meet. Then there’s Bernard Turp who is the fattest man you will ever see. He is also very grumpy. John Spoter is a great roommate because he is so small. He is also very skinny because he was never able to eat enough .Chumpy the dog, who is staying with us, barks all night but during the day he is sweet . He will cuddle up in your lap. He is all brown with a few spots around his ears and tail. His owner is Grampa S. he is a very lucky dog. Time for dinner.

Crossing the Isthmus 20 days into the trip
I’m glad I chose to travel across the Isthmus. I found a steamship without problems. I had only traveled for a week when my ship hit rock bottom! It ran a ground! I didn’t know the Isthmus was so shallow. The other passengers and I, a dozen or so people, waded to the bank, saving most of the supplies. If I were going to travel on foot, I worry that a black panther would be stalking me. I feel like I need to fix this situation. I can hear the black panther’s screeching at night. It’s creepy! After thinking it over I feel that I have no choice but to stay where I am and wait for another steamship, or even better , a couple of bungo boats. The Panama Jungle! There are many wild animals, venomous insects, and it is uncomfortably hot most of the time .I’m preparing my camp in the jungle. I wish I could go home and sleep in my bed. How long will I be stranded in this jungle? I hope I’m prepared and brave enough to survive.
-Charles
Later…
Grampa S. is snoring in his tent. He’s been to California before so he will be our leader in this predicament. Bernard is even grumpier then before because he had to leave his best pair of pants on board the ship when it hit bottom. He came back later and found that they were too soaked to be worn until they were stretched out on a rock in the sun and then dried for a day or two. Anyway mold is starting to creep up the pant legs. John’s one of those people that go with the flow. He does not care that the ship ran aground. If he does he doesn’t show it. Chumpy is happy to be off the ship and loves running around. Grampa S. is afraid a black panther will pounce on him so he doesn’t let him out much.

Sacramento, California
I have found a claim that has a bit of gold in it. On my first day here I found it. It started when I was sitting on a rock. I looked down for a moment and saw a faint glimmer in the dirt. I leaned down and found gold! I have not found much so far. I have only dug down about a foot . Another thing I should mention is there is a miner who has a claim next to me. He just yesterday found a nugget the size of his thumb! When he shouted “By The Great Horn Spoon!” I came running. When I saw the nugget, it was proof that the ride over here was not in vain.
